Diversinet Demonstrates Innovative S/MIME Deployment Solution for BlackBerry
Automated Enrollment Process Simplifies, Speeds S/MIME Deployment
Wireless Enterprise Symposium - Chicago, IL - Diversinet Corp. (OTCBB: DVNTF), a leading provider of secure mobile solutions, today demonstrated a new approach that simplifies and speeds the provisioning of Internet standard S/MIME (Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) software and digital certificates for organizations using the BlackBerry® wireless platform from Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM). Being demonstrated at the Wireless Enterprise Symposium 2004, the new component under development for Diversinet's Passport Trust Platform™ , the market leading wireless data security platform, automates the S/MIME user enrollment process, turning a cumbersome, time-consuming task into a simple user configuration step.
Until now, configuring client systems to use S/MIME for securing e-mail has been a complex and costly manual process that requires great effort on the parts of both end users and IT administrators to accomplish. Using Diversinet's innovative approach, BlackBerry users simply connect to a registration page over the Web to initiate the enrollment. Diversinet's Passport Provisioning Server™ then performs a series of enrollment functions on behalf of the user based on the organization's IT security policy, including user registration via LDAP directory, key generation, certificate request creation and secure Over-the-Air delivery of the key and certificate package to the user's BlackBerry handheld. When it is released later this year, the Passport Provisioning Server will bundle the S/MIME plug-in software with the download package, to automate the S/MIME software configuration for BlackBerry as well.
"Diversinet's new software will revolutionize the management and provisioning of digital certificates for mobile devices, overcoming one of the major obstacles to more widespread adoption of S/MIME-compliant secure e-mail and other certificate-based applications," said Stu Vaeth, chief security officer of Diversinet. "With our advanced solution for BlackBerry, the application of the Internet standard S/MIME protocol for secure e-mail can begin to move beyond government agencies and their contractors to more mainstream uses at financial institutions, healthcare providers and other Fortune 500 organizations."
The Passport Provisioning Server supports bulk registration to ease corporate IT administrator workload, and fully supports the S/MIME Support Package v1.5 for BlackBerry.
The Passport Provisioning Server is being demonstrated in Booth 136 in the Chicago Marriott Downtown hotel where the Wireless Enterprise Symposium is being held.
"For companies that want advanced secure PKI capabilities, Diversinet will offer a solution for BlackBerry that supports the S/MIME standard," said David Yach, senior vice president of software at Research In Motion. "Diversinet's solution is addressing the need for IT administrators to be able to more easily and effectively manage S/MIME deployments."
The Passport Certificate Server™ works with the BlackBerry security architecture to provide customers with an advanced security solution that helps ensure e-mail privacy and integrity through public-key cryptography. Passport Certificate Server is a standards-based security solution for wireless devices, such as mobile phones, PDAs and other embedded devices, many of which have limited security and processing capabilities. Passport Certificate Server also allows the deployment of secure applications such as payments, gaming transactions, high-value content, software management, e-mail and information delivery to any mobile device platform including BlackBerry.
